Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has shared an update on his future in international football, admitting that his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains uncertain.
Messi explained that while he is motivated and excited to keep playing, his age makes it unlikely that he will feature in another World Cup.
Same as I said before about the World Cup, I don’t think I’ll play another. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But we’re almost there, so I’m excited and motivated to play. Like I always say, I take it day by day, match by match,” Messi said.
He emphasized that his decision will depend on how he feels physically and mentally as the tournament approaches.
Day by day, I try to feel good and, above all, be honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it. But when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time. So, I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good. We’ll see. I haven’t made a decision about the World Cup.”
Messi added that his immediate focus is on completing the current MLS season and preparing for the next one before making any final decision.
Match by match, I’ll finish the season, then I’ll have preseason, and there will be six months left. We’ll see how I feel. Hopefully, I’ll have a good preseason in 2026, finish this MLS season well, and then I’ll decide.”
