Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has condemned the neglect of Nigeria’s past sports heroes, accusing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and government of failing to care for retired athletes.
Speaking at the burial of late ex-goalkeeper Peter Rufai, West expressed anger that Rufai’s family had to seek financial help for his funeral, vowing that he would never allow his son to play for Nigeria under such conditions.
His remarks have stirred heated reactions, especially as they came shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rewarded current Super Eagles players with cash, houses, and national honours.
While sports journalist Calvin Emeka argued that the current administration should not bear full blame, he stressed the need for a financially strong federation and better welfare structures for all Nigerians, not just athletes.
Former striker Brown Ideye also weighed in, advising players to secure their financial futures by saving from day one of their careers.
West’s comments have reignited a national debate: while today’s stars are celebrated, are Nigeria’s sporting legends being abandoned in retirement?
